Online Christian Counseling in Ohio: Is It Effective for Healing Childhood Trauma?
What if the very thing you're unsure about is the very thing God wants to use to begin your healing from Childhood Wounds?
If you've found yourself here, there's a good chance you've been asking that exact question.
You’re beyond exhausted after another day of carrying emotions that no one else can see, silently wondering if it's finally time to talk to someone, but you're hesitant because the idea of meeting with a therapist through a computer screen feels...different.
Can online counseling really work? Can you actually build trust with someone you've never met in person? Can God move through a virtual session?
As a Christian childhood trauma therapist serving women throughout Ohio, these are questions I hear all the time. They're good questions, and if I'm being real, I had many of them myself when I first began offering counseling online.
Today, after walking alongside countless women as they heal from childhood trauma, anxiety, perfectionism, people-pleasing, emotional abuse, and spiritual wounds, my answer is simple:
Yes. Online Christian counseling is incredibly effective.
Not because technology makes healing online any easier, but just because God isn't limited by a building, four walls, or a therapy office.
He meets us wherever we are.
Sometimes that's in a church pew or in the middle of a worship song, or in a parked car during your lunch break while you finally allow yourself to say out loud what you've carried alone for far too long.
Effective Online Christian Counseling Starts with Emotional Safety
Effectiveness has far less to do with whether you're sitting across from your therapist in an office and far more to do with the quality of the relationship you're building together.
Healing has always happened in the context of safe relationships.
Whether we're sitting in the same room or connecting through a secure video screen, my goal remains exactly the same: to create an environment where you feel genuinely seen, heard, and completely safe.
Many of the women I work with carry childhood trauma. They learned early in life that vulnerability wasn't always safe. They were ignored, dismissed, criticized, manipulated, or forced to become who everyone else needed them to be.
Because of that, trust isn't something I expect clients to hand over simply because I have "therapist" after my name.
I believe trust isn't yours to just give. It's mine to earn.
From our very first conversation, I'm intentionally working to create safety—not just emotionally, but spiritually as well. I pay close attention to body language, subtle emotional shifts, changes in tone, and moments when your nervous system is telling a story that words haven't caught up to yet.
Trauma isn't only stored in memories. It's carried in the body.
That's why even through a computer screen, I'm continually listening to both your words and what your body may be communicating underneath them.
Healing doesn't require us to share the same office.
It requires authentic connection.
Does Online Counseling Feel Less Personal?
One woman shared with me during her free consultation "I'm worried I'll never feel connected through a computer."
She had experienced counseling before where she shared feeling emotionally disconnected from her therapist. She described those sessions as feeling like she was talking to a wall.
Understandably so, she didn't want to experience that again. One of the things that matters most to me is making sure the women I work with never feel like they're just another appointment on my calendar.
Every woman has a story. Every story deserves to be handled gently.
As we began working together, something unexpected happened. She realized she actually felt more comfortable opening up from her own environment. There wasn't the pressure of walking into a waiting room. She didn't have to wonder if someone from her church’s small group might see her.
She wasn't sitting in an unfamiliar office trying to regulate her emotions. She was in a place that already felt familiar.
For some women, that's their living room. Others choose their bedroom. Some meet with me while sitting in their car because it's the one quiet place they can find during the day.
I've even had women meet during their children's therapy appointments while waiting in the parking lot. I've had women wear headsets because it helps them feel more private.
I've even had women type certain things in the chat instead of saying them out loud because they felt more comfortable with that communication domain.
Healing isn't about forcing yourself into someone else's process. It's about creating enough safety that your own healing can begin.
If that means making accommodations so you feel comfortable, then we'll make accommodations.
Can God Really Work Through a Computer Screen?
The real question you might be asking is this: "Will God still meet me there?"
Absolutely. The Holy Spirit isn't confined by geography. He isn't stronger in church buildings than He is in your kitchen. He isn't more present in my therapy office than he is in your living room.
God fills every space.
Psalm 139 reminds us that there is nowhere we can go where His presence isn't already there.
I've witnessed moments during online Christian counseling sessions that still leave me in awe.
One woman paused in the middle of our conversation. She became quiet. After several moments she smiled through tears and simply noted she was connecting with the goodness of God. Not in my office. Not because we were physically together. But right there, in her own home.
Those are moments I'll never forget.
I don't believe healing happens because of me. I'm simply privileged to witness what God is already doing. As a Christian counselor, my desire isn't to insert faith awkwardly into our conversations. Faith isn't an add-on. It's the foundation.
If Christ is the center of your life, then He naturally belongs in the center of your healing too. Imagine trying to build a house without laying the foundation first. Eventually everything begins to crack.
That's how I often feel when Christian women receive counseling that completely ignores the deepest part of who they are. Your relationship with God shapes your identity. It shapes your hope, your understanding of forgiveness, and your purpose.
Why would we leave the most important relationship in your life outside of the therapy room?
We don't. Instead, we invite Him into the process.
Sometimes that means praying together, exploring scripture, wrestling, honestly with spiritual doubts, church hurts, or questions you’ve just been afraid to ask.
More often, it simply means remaining quietly attentive to where the Holy Spirit is already leading the conversation.
I often find myself praying silently throughout sessions. I genuinely believe the Lord knows exactly what each woman sitting across the screen needs far better than I do. I want Him to lead and guide. Long term healing has never been about having all the right therapeutic techniques.
It's about inviting the Wonderful Counselor into the room.
And the beautiful thing is-God has never once been limited by a Wi-Fi connection.
How Is Christian Counseling Different From Secular Therapy?
One of the biggest differences I see between Christian counseling and secular counseling is what serves as the foundation.
There are many gifted therapists who are not Christians, and they do wonderful work helping people process pain. I believe that if your life is truly built on Christ, then your healing should be anchored in Him too.
Imagine investing in a beautiful home without pouring a foundation. It might look impressive for a little bit, but eventually cracks begin to appear because the structure isn't supported.
Our faith isn't something we simply add to therapy once we've talked about everything else. For many Christian women, it is the lens through which they understand their identity, their purpose, their suffering, and their hope.
When we leave God out of the healing process, we leave out the very One who created your heart.
Throughout our work together, we'll certainly use evidence-based trauma approaches. We'll talk about your nervous system. We'll explore attachment wounds, emotional patterns, childhood experiences, and relationship dynamics.
But we'll also ask questions like:
"What does God say about your worth?"
"How has childhood trauma shaped the way you see the Father?"
"What lies have you believed about yourself that don't agree with Scripture?"
Healing becomes about more than simply feeling better.
It becomes about becoming more aligned with the woman God created you to be.
Why Are Women Across Ohio Choosing Online Christian Counseling?
One thing I absolutely love about online counseling is that it removes so many barriers that once kept women from getting help.
Life is busy. Really busy.
You're juggling work deadlines, children, marriages, church responsibilities, aging parents, doctor's appointments, sports practices, grocery shopping, and somehow you're supposed to find time to heal too.
By the time many women consider counseling, they're already stretched thin.
Adding another hour of driving each week could be too much to ask Online counseling gives many women something they haven't had in a long time—Options.
I've met with women during their lunch break because that was the only uninterrupted hour in their week. I've connected with moms while they waited in the parking lot during their child's therapy appointment.
I've met with women who live in small Ohio towns where finding a Christian trauma therapist nearby simply isn't realistic.
Instead of settling for whoever happens to be down the road, they're able to work with someone who specializes in unresolved childhood trauma through a Christian lens.
Healing isn't about finding the closest therapist. It's about finding the right therapist.
Another unexpected benefit? Consistency. When snowstorms roll through Ohio...therapy doesn't have to stop. When work gets busy...therapy doesn't have to stop. When life feels overwhelming...therapy doesn't have to stop. Consistency is one of the greatest gifts you can give your healing journey.
How Is Faith Integrated Into Counseling?
Faith isn't something I force into the conversation. It's something that naturally shapes every conversation. Every session is different because each person I serve has different needs.
Some women are comfortable with prayer, others are processing Church hurt and aren’t ready for that. Some wrestle with questions they've never felt safe asking before.
Others want help understanding forgiveness without minimizing the pain they've experienced. One of my favorite exercises involves helping women rethink forgiveness. For years, many have believed forgiveness simply means pretending the hurt didn't matter, or "just letting it go."
That's not Biblical forgiveness. I describe forgiveness as handing the emotional debt someone owes you over to God. Instead of carrying the burden of collecting what can never truly be repaid, you place that debt into God's hands. You allow Him to become the righteous Judge while you receive His peace.
That doesn't excuse abuse. It doesn't erase accountability. It doesn't automatically rebuild trust. It does free your heart from carrying a burden you were never designed to hold forever.
Alongside this, we spend a great deal of time listening to your body. Childhood trauma doesn't just affect your thoughts. It shapes your nervous system. Many women don't realize they're living in survival mode every single day. Their bodies are constantly preparing for danger that no longer exists.Part of healing is gently teaching your body that it is finally safe.
Your body has been protecting you for a very long time. Now, together, we'll help it learn that it doesn't have to work quite so hard anymore.
Who Is Online Christian Counseling For?
Women who do best in online Christian counseling are individuals who are ready to let someone into their story. They are willing to do the hard work of healing. Often, they actually feel safer beginning that work from an environment they already know.
There's something comforting about sitting in your favorite chair with a warm cup of coffee, wrapped in a blanket, while talking about painful memories.
Your surroundings can help your nervous system feel more regulated. When you can stay more regulated in counseling, you can do deeper work.
Online counseling is also wonderful for women whose schedules make traditional counseling difficult. Busy professionals. Mothers. Caregivers. Women living in rural communities. Women searching for a therapist who understands both childhood trauma and Biblical truth.
That said, I'm also honest when I believe someone would genuinely benefit more from meeting in person. Some situations require additional levels of support that are better provided face-to-face
Part of my responsibility is helping you determine which setting will best support your healing—not simply assuming online counseling is the answer for everyone.
How Has My Own View of Online Counseling Changed?
I'll be a bit raw here. When I first began offering online counseling, I wondered whether it would really work.
Could people truly feel connected? Would the relationship be as meaningful? Would healing happen as deeply? Over time, my own concerns quietly disappeared. What changed my mind wasn't technology. It was people.
Week after week I watched women experience breakthrough. I watched tears become hope. I watched shame lose its grip. I watched women begin believing they were worthy of love again. I realized something incredibly important. My responsibility is simply to show up as the same authentic, genuine person every single session.
I protect your privacy in my space. You protect yours in your space. Over time, something beautiful happens. Those two spaces become connected. For one hour each week, our worlds meet. Trust grows. Healing grows. Hope grows.
Somewhere along the way, the screen almost disappears because what matters most has never been physical proximity.
It's relationship.
How Do I Begin Online Christian Counseling?
If you're reading this late at night after another exhausting day, I hope you'll consider reaching out for your free 20 minute consultation phone call. Therapy isn't a place where someone sits across from you trying to figure you out or tell you everything that's wrong with you. It's a place where two human beings sit together with honesty, compassion, and hope. One of us simply has the training to help make sense of the places where pain has kept you stuck.
My heart is to walk alongside women as they move closer to Christ and closer to the woman He created them to be. I want you to experience freedom from the wounds that have quietly shaped your relationships, your confidence, your faith, and your identity. I want you to know what it feels like to wake up without carrying yesterday's survival strategies into today's relationships. Healing is possible because God is in the business of restoring what trauma tried to steal.
Whether you live in a small Ohio town, a busy suburb, or somewhere in between, you deserve counseling that honors both your faith and your story. Healing doesn't require a perfect schedule or having all the answers. It simply begins with the willingness to take one small step.
If you're wondering whether online Christian counseling is worth it, I hope you already know my answer. Not because therapy is the hero—Jesus is. Therapy is simply one of the many ways He lovingly meets His daughters as He leads them toward healing.
I also invite you to continue exploring the articles I've written, where you'll find practical guidance, Biblical encouragement, and trauma-informed resources to help you better understand your story and the healing process. My hope is that every resource brings you one step closer to the freedom Christ desires for you.
If you are ready to begin healing from childhood trauma through a Christ-centered approach, I'd be honored to walk alongside you. Together, we'll create a safe space where your story is heard, your nervous system can begin to settle, and your identity becomes rooted not in what happened to you, but in who God says you are. Your story isn't over, and you don't have to carry it alone anymore.
